Brooklyn's Rocking

The opening of the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, New York last night was billed to be a huge night in the history of boxing in Brooklyn. The headliners were from Philadelphia and Tijuna with the opening bout in the televised bout was between fights from St Louis and Miami engaging in a bout we would all love to forget. The night though was all about New York especially Brooklyn.

There has been some great fighters from Brooklyn like 'Iron' Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe and Zab Judah to name a few. The televised event opening bout was a very boring and uneventful start to the show. Randall Bailey defended his IBF Welterweight Championship against Devon Alexander with Kell Brook earning the mandatory shot at the Championship earlier on in the night defeating Hector Saldivia. The fight was a true borefest with Bailey supplying no Champion fight losing on points in an easy fight for Alexander. Alexander become the new IBF Welterweight Champion in a true comfortable but unimpressive fashion.

Brooklyn would then finally see a home born fighter Peter Quillen challenging tough Cameroonian born Hassan N'Dam N'Jikam for his WBO Middleweight Championship. The bout was the fight of the night with N'Dam using his compact style to cause the Cuban-American a lot of trouble. In the fourth round the bout got even more exciting when Quillen's hooks and uppercuts came into play. Both fighters came into the fight with knockout power and Quillen showed true power knocking down N'Dam with full blooded shots knocking down N'Dam 6 times in total in the fight. Two in the fourth, Two in the sixth and two in the twelth. N'Dam showed resilence and passion winning the majority rounds but the six knockdowns giving the Brooklyn fans the World Champion they wanted to open the fight.

The second Brooklyn fighter and the final one Paulie Malignaggi fought against Pablo Cesar Cano but the WBA Welterweight Championship was not on the line due to Cano failing to make weight. Even though in February the mexican was fighting as a lightweight. The fight started well for 'The Magic Man' with fantastic peppering shots which caused a bad cut over the eye of the Mexican early on in the fight. Cano though looked fantastic and fought back with intent finally having his aggressive style pay off with a fantastic right hook in the 11th round putting the Brooklyn favourite down. I had Malignaggi winning by a round but wouldn't of been surprised if it went either way. The Magic Man won by split decision with one of the judges scores been ridicilous with 119-108 in the favour of Cano and the other two judges calling the bout 115-114 in the favour of Malignaggi.

The main event was a re-match between Erick Morales and Danny Garcia. Garcia came into the fight after a sensational knockout of Amir Khan in his previous bouts to unify the WBC and WBA Super World Light-Welterweight Championships. Danny Garcia in reality fought a fight he should of easily won comfortably with a fantastic 4th round Knockout of the great Morales with a fantastic left hook spinning the Mexican around.

All in all this was a great night of boxing and we look forward to the next fight night in Brooklyn, New York.
