Broner v Burns - Is this the right move?

The debate on everyone boxing fans lips since Ricky Burns devasting victory over fellow British lightweight rival Kevin Mitchell in Glasgow, Scotland on 22nd September 2012 is to get the fight on between himself and rising superstar Adrien Broner.

Burns shocked the world in the 50/50 fight with the power he showed to take out Mitchell in the fouth round via TKO with many people who have written off the Scottish two weight World Champion on many occasions. Many of his fans are calling for a huge unifaction bout to be made with newly crowned WBC Lightweight Champion, Adrien 'The Problem' Broner who not only beat but destroyed the former Champion Antonio Demarco in Atlantic City, New Jersey, USA last night with a 8th Round stoppage.

I would never deny I was one of the people that doubted the credentials of Rickster from when he fought Roman Martinez when he was crowned the WBO Super-Featherweight Champion, when he fought Katsidis and finally believed he would lose to Mitchell. Burns is the most improved boxer in recent times but this may be one step to many.

Broner whom many have put in the same mould as the pound for pound king Floyd Mayweather looked unstoppable last night. He not only beat the number one Lightweight in the World he destroyed him. The range of punches 'The Problem' had at his disposal last night was breathtaking and the question was not would he fights Ricky Burns? but would Ricky Burns want to risk starting over again?

I believe there maybe more viable options for the man from Coatbridge in this open division. His management received criticism for the poor decision to put him in the ring against Liam Walsh but due to injury Burns is now left without an opponent for the bout on the 15th December. Burns will need to rise to face the Elite but Broner is defiantly not the option.

Burns should target Richar Abril or the winner of the IBF Lightweight bout between Miguel Vasquez or Mercito Gesta. Broner is destined to greater things and will eventually move up weight again. The problem could be dire for Burns.

Tony 'The Bomber' Bellew (19-1 [12ko]) emphasized himself even more to myself, Championship material with a brave display against the Argentine Roberto Bolonti on the undercard of the Froch v Mack fight last night. The Bomber whom many criticised after his last fight with the dangerous but aged Edison Miranda came into the fight and put the Argentine on the back foot from the first round. Many of Bellew's shots were wild but he clearly had dominance and looked like he could take the best the Argentine could muster when he was caught with a wild but clean left hand.

Bellew then was caught by a left hand which caused a terrible cut which may have seen the Scousers dreams lay in tatters if the fight was stopped. The Bomber though had the best cutman in the business in his corner in Mick Williamson who managed to patch the wide gash up as best as possible. Bellew showed the class of Champion in the waiting by total changing the game plan. He picked his shots and protected the eye while also keeping Bolonti on the back foot from start to finish. Bellew won the fight by unanimous decision thus been crowned the WBC Silver Light-Heavyweight Champion gaining himself a guranteed top 10 place throughout all the governing bodies.

The sad thing is we will not be able to see Bellew now till Spring due to the large gash along the right eyebrow. Many people have asked myself about if Bellew is capable of being a World Champion and my mind and heart defiantly believe one day he will be a world champion.

Kal Yafai (5-0 [4ko] made short work of his Italian counterpart with another powerful bodyshot which left the Italian in quite a deal of distress. Yafai, is defiantly my pick as one of the most exciting prospects in the game. My view is getting the Birmingham man in with Jason Booth as he would learn so much in that fight with him.

Scott Cardle (8-0 [2ko]) overcome the fustration against Miguel Aguillar who certainly did not come to fight. He came to upset the prospect and at times managed to succeed. Cardle at times didn't look comfortable and was very fustrated he needs to overcome these obstacles if he is to progress in boxing. We will see Cardle on the 1st December 2012 and will hope to see the Blackpool man perform better in his next bout.

Callum Smith (1-0), another Smith addition to boxing looked very sharp in his debut bout and looks like he could be a good boxer. I belive it is tough to show how a fighter does but many rave about the young scouser including Carl Froch after some great sparring. He needs to be active but Hearn likes to keep his fighters active.

The Cobra Strikes Again!

The sheriff of Nottingham defended his IBF Super-Middleweight World Championship in what most predicted in a straight forward manor last night in the Capital FM Arena in his home town. While many predicted Froch to win the aggression and the predator instincts of 'The Cobra' simply took apart the American Yusaf Mack. Yusaf Mack looked confident as he made his way to the ring even dancing which the crowd promptly returned with chants to 'Who are ya?' to the American.

Yusaf 'Mack Attack' Mack (31-5-2 [17ko]) had a lot to say during the pre-fight confrence even attempting to provoke the Champion by calling Froch 'A Fake Calzaghe'. The crowd though arupted when the annoucement came that the hometown hero would be about to make his way to the ring. Froch (30-2 [22ko]) looked as focused as he did back in May when he took apart the Lucian Bute bandwagon in that very ring.

'The Cobra' started off feeling out his opponent by finding his range and after a minute and half of the bout Froch landed with a swinging left hand which forced the stylish American to hold on. This was followed by another left hand which had Mack down. The knockdown was flash and Mack rose with very strong legs but Froch continued his dominence and proved he was the boss continuing to throw attacks causing the American trouble.

The second round seen Mack have some success by contering the Cobra's advances but was brought strictly back to earth in the last 30 seconds of the round when Froch landed some powerful shots causing Mack to spit out his gum shield. In the third round, Mack looked flustered like he was trying to ride the storm but the second round was just the calm before it as Froch was throwing out jabs and continuing to find his range. In the last minute of the round a four punch combo was unleashed on Mack with one huge left hand to the body leaving the American writhing in pain as the referee counted the 10 count.

Carl Froch may have been expected to win this fight but he done this in fantastic style showing he is a force to be wreckoned with. Froch deserved an easier fight but he showed he still has the same determination to go into the ring in the same manner and walk through anyone in his way.

I personally don't believe Lucian Bute should invoke the re-match clause as Froch looks like the fight in May has continued to make him more hungry and more determined to continue with his own personal achievement to be completed while the Canadian Based Romanian looked broken in his last fight against Grachev a few weeks ago. Froch should aim for rematches against the only two men to defeat the Cobra in Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward.

The Cobra will Strike Again!

Question and Answers

Question and Answers
with Scotty Cardle

Welcome to Question and Answers on Jamie's Boxing Zone Blog. Today we have Former Great Britian Boxer and Professional Lightweight prospect Scotty Cardle. Scotty was Commonwealth Champion in the amateurs. The young star has a great future ahead of him.

Hello Scotty, thanks for taking time out for this Question and Answers session. What is your first recollection of boxing? and what inspired you to take serious?

Hi Jamie,
My first recollection of boxing has to be staying up late as a kid with my brother and dad to watch the big fights in the states (mostly Tyson) and I never took boxing serious until my 2nd fight, I lost my first fight and didn't believe in my talent until my first win

Who is your past/present fighter and why?

Past fighter has to be Mike Tyson, still watch a lot of Tyson to this day, always loved the way he gets the job done so aggressively! And my current favourite fighter is Canelo Alvarez, been watching him for the past couple years now and he has a very exciting style!

For people who may not of known yourself, Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I'm Scotty Cardle, 8 year international amateur, 6 of them years with the GB Podium Squad, No.1 light-welterweight in Europe & No.5 light-welterweight in the world (2010) ... Now lightweight professional under Matchroom Sports, currently 7 - 0

You was a very good amateur who fought for Team GB for numerous years and also won a Commonwealth Championship. How important is having an amateur pedigree in boxing?

For most people it's very important! Having an amateur pedigree will step you up much quicker in the pro ranks than not having one, but also I have seen a lot of pros come from a very short amateur career and become highly successful so it all depends on what kind of fighter you are.

You turned Professional in March of this year. What is the difference from being an Amateur boxer to a Professional?

Since I have turned pro I've realised how different this game is to the amateurs, amateur is all about getting the points up and not getting caught. I'm only new to the pro ranks but from my experience I think there is more time taken trying to read the opponent and affecting the opponent more. Also, obviously you have to stay switched on in both amateur and professional but I think in the pros you need to stay that extra bit alert, shots are much more affective without headgear.

You are currently with 7 wins from your first 7 bouts winning fights comfortable. Are you happy with the great start you have made as a professional?

Yes, very happy! In my eyes I haven't been given one push over or an easy fight, I don't see the benefit on fighting kids who are just going to drop from a soft shot, I want to learn fast and hopefully step up fast too

How do you feel your debut year has gone this year?

I'm happy, I'm unbeaten and I'm learning in every fight, hopefully move up to title status next year.

What are your plans for 2013 and what would you like to achieve in the next year or so

Obviously taking every fight as it comes but I'm hoping on a title, maybe a northern title or an English title, just gotta keep winning.

and Finally what does the future hold for Scotty Cardle?

I'm in it for the long haul, I want to step up in my own time, beat the best in britain and then take on the others across the world, I won't be happy until I have a world title

thanks for your time and I will continue to take notice in promising career. Good luck for the future.

Catch Scotty Cardle in his next fight on the Carl Froch v Yusaf Mack undercard on Saturday 17th November 2012. Cardle will step in the ring with Joe Elfidh (7-2) who gave Former world champion Scott Harrison a difficult fight in his last bout.
